Bush Artist Program Introduces 2010 Fellows

Category Guidelines and Application

The Bush Artist Program makes awards in eight categories that rotate on a two-year cycle. We recognize that artists and their work often do not fit strict categories. It may be that none of the categories listed, or more than one, seems appropriate for your work. If so:

  • select the category that is most likely to include work similar to yours or
  • select the category that is likely to have panelists who will be knowledgeable about the field in which you work
  • if you have questions, please call us.

Collaborative Applications — The program will accept collaborative applications in any of the categories shown below; collaboration is defined as up to two artists who clearly demonstrate a history of ongoing collaboration. Please contact program staff before submitting a collaborative application.

The 2010 (even year) fellowships will be awarded in three categories:

The application deadlines for these categories has passed. Please check back August 2010 for 2011 (odd) year applications.

 

Visual Arts

For visual artists who work in two- and three-dimensional forms including but not limited to painting, photography, printmaking, works on paper, collage, mixed media, sculpture, installation, artists books, cartooning, ceramics and fiber arts.

 

Media Arts

For media artists working with digital media including but not limited to narrative, documentary, animation or experimental time-based works using audio, digital, film and/or video media. Computer arts are also included in this category.

 

Traditional and Functional Craft Arts

For artists who work in all functional forms of traditional or contemporary craft arts including but not limited to weaving, quilting, woodcarving, basketry, metal work, beadwork, ceramics, glass, wood, metal, fiber and recycled materials.

 



The 2011 (odd year) fellowships will be awarded in the following five categories with deadlines in Fall 2010:

 

Script Works
For playwrights and screen writers.

 

Literary Arts
For writers who work in all genres of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and experimental forms. It does not include criticism, journalism or writing for educational purposes. For additional eligibility requirements, please see category guidelines.

 

Performance-Based Work
For artists who create original work (perform, write and/or direct) for live performance including choreography, storytelling, spoken-word, puppetry, movement/physical performance, performance art, interdisciplinary and devised theatrical works.

 

Music Composition
For composers who work in a range of genres such as jazz, blues, chamber, symphonic, choral, electronic, experimental or as singer/songwriters.

 

Traditional & Ethnic Performing Arts
For artists working in a performance tradition that has endured through several generations and is characteristic of an ethnic, religious, linguistic and/or regional group. This includes music, dance and storytelling with priority to artists who have achieved mastery of a folk or traditional ethnic art.
