The majority of Rollin Marquette’s (Minneapolis, Minn.) works are created based on the physical size, shape and character of the space for the exhibition, whether indoor or outdoor. Attention is given to how the viewer’s individual physical space interacts with the sculpture. Of interest is the relationship of one’s body to other objects in the world, as well as the psychological and behavioral effects of personal space based on our environment. Inspiration is largely derived from human involvement in, and the workings of munitions, explosives, chemistry, physics and industry. The materials are largely chosen for their intrinsic content and beauty in their raw form. About Marquette’s work, Johanna Burton wrote, “By playing up the formal beauty of materials we normally never consider aesthetically, they counter intuitively direct us to consider those materials’ functions in the world.”
